A Tale of Two Hotels

Eureka Springs boasts many historic hotels, two of which dominate the city skyamericas most haunted hotelline: the famous 1886 Crescent, “the most haunted hotel in America”; and the 1905 Basin Park, built just steps from the magic healing spring around which Eureka Springs exploded into being. Both hotels offer tours of the premises.

The Crescent offers one of the best-attended ghost tours in the United States. You will start on the top floor and wind down to the notorious Norman Baker’s morgue. On the way, experienced guides in period costume relate events from the hotel’s strange and colorful history, and tell the stories that have come down to us over decades of ghostly sightings and experiences. Few people visit Eureka Springs without taking the ghost tour at the atmospheric Crescent Hotel!

The Spirits of the Basin tour is one of newest attractions in Eureka Springs, and rapidly Spirits of the Basin Tourbecoming another “must-do” activity while in town.  Guests explore the tallest building in Eureka Springs – “eight stories high and every floor a ground floor” according to Ripley’s Believe it or Not – from the primal underground cave to the specially-built safety deck on the roof, while knowledgeable storytellers evoke the years gone by.

What do we mean by “Spirits?” Firstly, this is a tour about people – the rich parade of fascinating individuals who lived and worked (and perhaps also linger) at “the people’s hotel, the beating heart and soul of Eureka Springs.”  Secondly, spirits of the basin tourwhile nowhere can compare with the Crescent for tales of the supernatural, the Basin Park has its own stories of ghostly Spirits. And since the Basin Park functioned as a popular speakeasy during the “Chicago years” of the 1940s and ‘50s, “Spirits” also refers to contraband liquor… The tour concludes with a complimentary shot of Arkansas rye whisky for interested guests.

Come to Eureka Springs and take both tours. Meet the ghosts who have lingered for decades in the halls of the majestic Crescent Hotel, and delve into the past at the Basin Park to hear the stories of the folks who made Eureka Springs what it is today!

We recommend you book your tours in advance through www.reserveeureka.com.

Spirits of the Basin

America’s Most Haunted tour guides have begun investigation of the Basin Park Hotel in downtown Eureka Springs with a launch of the Spirits of the Basin Tour.  Our tour guides run daily investigations of the long rumored spirits within this 1905 landmark hotel that has already uncovered evidence of the paranormal.

Testimonials:

“Guests in room 309 reported they awoke at 4am to see a 6 foot tall man wearing boots, spurs, and a duster standing at the foot of their bed.”

“I stopped by my room to put some powder in my shoes.  I distinctly remembered the powder being the last thing I packed before leaving my home. However, the powder was nowhere to be found.  I left the room to go shopping downtown.  I purchased a simple silver ring and placed it on the nightstand along with my watch, glasses and loose change, then went to sleep.  The next morning the ring was nowhere to be found.  After searching everywhere around the bed and shifting through the luggage items I gave up.  I raised my arms up into the air and said aloud, “When you finish playing with the ring, please return it to me.” Two weeks later, while sweeping my home, the ring appeared in the path of the floor that I was sweeping.”

“Last winter I was doing room checks on the second floor, no guests were around.  I had checked the north hall and turned the corner into the hall, towards the front of the hotel, when I heard a door slam behind me down the north hall. I checked the hall again but there wasn’t any unlocked doors nor anyone there. I proceeded to the South hall, as I started walking down the hall I heard what sounded like someone jiggling a door knob. This is the only time I have ever been unnerved in the Basin.”

It is important to know that while the America’s most haunted tour guides continue to investigate the Basin Park Hotel, the spirits tour covers more than just the ghostly experiences.  The tour captures all of the history and colorful characters who stayed, worked and died at the 1905 historic property. Tours are TuesdaySunday throughout the year (tours will only be offered Th-Sun from 8/16-9/6)– inviting guest to explore the legendary Basin Park Hotel, from the Crow’s Nest to the underground cave, and experience the spirits – living, dead and 92 proof .

Strange Experience in the Morgue

“My last experience was in the morgue at the very end of the tour when the ghost tour americas most haunted hotel ghost storiesguide was trying to contact a young man. I stood at the very edge of the freezer and my friend stood right next to me with her back to an empty hall that we all had just came through. While the guide was trying to communicate, my friend whispered to me asking if I had heard “that.” I turned to her and let her know that I only heard a child say something that I couldn’t make out. I then turned back around to listen to the guide. A few moments had only passed when my friend ask me again if I could hear “that.” I asked her what she had heard, and she had stated she was hearing breathing in her ear right between us. I bent a little and tried to listen but heard nothing so I just shook my head and turned back around. She then told me to hold my breath so she could listen and I did so for about 20 seconds. After a few more moments had passed, she told me again, “You don’t hear that?!.” This time, the look on her face was of horror, and her eyes were teary. I then shook my head, then turned back to listen to the guide. Suddenly, it felt as if someone took both their hands and slowly expanded their finger tips widely on the back of my head. I turned around but nothing was there, plus, my head was against the freezer so no one could have done that.”

My Legs Went Freezing Cold

Many people have experiences which are quite remarkable and which they cannot explain America's Most Haunted Hotelat the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa. The following was sent by Vivian Angel and her friends. They were on my ghost tour a few days ago:

“While sitting and waiting while you spoke about what will happen on the tour, my legs, from mid-thigh down to my toes suddenly went freezing cold. I looked around for the air-conditioning and noticed it was not blowing on me and the rest of my body was normal. I then looked at my friend and she asked if I felt like the floor was shaking and I told her that the whole Hotel feels like it’s shaking. It felt kind of like being on a ship on water. She then felt something brush against her leg and looked to see what it was but nothing was there.”

ESP Weekend Investigation

ESP Weekend 2015  REPORT

Every year we try a different formula with ESP and every year we get a few more elements right. The general consensus, from investigation leaders, participants and staff, is that 2015 was the best ESP weekend to date!

  • We limited the number of participants in the guided investigations, to avoid contamination of active sites.
  • We cut back on satellite events, to allow more time for investigations.
  • However, we did extend the hours of our popular ESP testing, and the Psychomanteum – this year set up in the notorious “Dr” Norman Baker’s penthouse – was available until the sun rose. .
  • Lead investigator Larry Flaxman, best-selling author and founder of ARPAST, shared his time and expertise with every ESP participant, and generously provided the investigation with thousands of dollars worth of highly sensitive equipment.
  • We instituted a long-overdue policy of no alcohol or alcohol-affected individuals allowed on the investigations.
  • We extended the investigation to include sister hotel the Basin Park, in downtown Eureka Springs. The Basin Park was closed and empty for the occasion.

And our new approach paid off !

We had an unprecedented amount of response in the 1886 Crescent hotel, from orbs to Eureka Springs Paranormal WeekendEVP to a mysterious dark blob that was captured on thermal-imaging camera and left marks on lead investigator Larry Flaxman’s back!

The Basin Park rewarded the first really organized investigation with abundant responses to the Ovilus, EMF and EVP meters. Especially in Room 519, long conversations were held, the instruments yielding yes or no answers to questions put by the investigators.

A young lady was talking to a friend in one of the rooms on the highly active 3rd floor. Her friend noticed a red line slowly appearing around her neck. They both felt an oppressive sense of unease and left the room. The mark remained for hours after. We have no explanation for this – but it is interesting to note that in the early days of the hotel, when gambling was a common activity, one loser who was caught trying to slip through one of the famous bridges to the cliffside had his throat slit by the people he was trying to avoid…

Did we capture any hard evidence during ESP 15? As expected, our instruments registered Eureka Springs Paranormal Weekendsome major anomalies. But, as with most supernatural phenomena, all we can say is: inexplicable, unrepeatable, inconclusive. However, as ghost-hunting equipment becomes more sophisticated, the percentage of irregularities that cannot be explained by rational means increases. We videotaped throughout the event. Look for an edited version – highlights of ESP15 – to appear on our Facebook and Website pages soon.

We continue to refine our ESP weekends to make the event ever more attractive to serious paranormal investigation groups. Every year we hear more positive feedback from participants, and 2015 received the most enthusiastic responses to date. Next year, we are planning to outdo ourselves!

ESP 2016 will take place over two weekends: Jan 8,9,10 and 15,16,17.

The Basin Park will be investigated on the late evening of Sunday Jan 10th

We invite you to join us for ESP 16. Bring your group, bring your equipment, bring yourself, and your curiosity. See you in the shadows!
